Mr. Brandt identifies (at least) two issues with Google's PageRank algorithm, such as on his website www.google-watch.org

As we are not all operative reviewers, but rather free and accepted Wikipedia Reviewers I think it's only worth focusing upon issues that are salient to this website.

It is well known in many diverse fields that once one begins to use an inidicator of the state of an object to regulate said object that such indicator quickly becomes random noise. For example, some economists believe that we shall see this happen with regard to interest rates and inflation in the future. Or to take another example, speed limits and fatality rates have essentially no correlation now.

The same seems to be happening with PageRank, and particularly with ranking Wikipedia so highly. For as everyone starts to use google, links are driven by PageRank. So PageRank results start to feed PageRank itself. And then the algorithm becomes useless.

Perhaps, therefore, Wikipedia will be the end of Google.

Anyway, I'm off to the pub.

Well, Wikipedia has its own search engine now. And Google has responded by launching their own wiki.

It'll be interesting to see if they fight each other, or if they ultimately join up. One way or the other, "there can be only one".

Thats a tad different to what I was expecting - its unofficial and run on wikia. Not exactly a strong statement to wikipedia.

Jotspot?

Indeed, that is Google's wiki -- http://www.jot.com/.

PLEASE don't purport that Google's wiki is on Der Jimbo's cash site!
