Full Version: Jimmy Wales is a $25,000 question on "Millionaire"
> Wikimedia Discussion > General Discussion
dtobias
On the syndicated version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? that aired today, a question worth $25,000 was "Who is Jimmy Wales?" The contestant (a 20-year-old college student) needed to call his "Phone a Friend" to get the answer, "a) Founder of Wikipedia". ("Co-founder" wasn't a choice.)

Then, in the following question, he failed to get "CAPTCHA" as the right answer to a question about what they call the things where you have to type a bunch of characters to gain access to a Web site.

I don't think it's at all odd that someone, even a 20-year old college student, wouldn't know who Jimmy Wales is. Heck, there are people who regularly edit Wikipedia who don't know who he is.

I was slated to be on the prime-time version of "Millionaire", but then 9/11 happened, and I think they went on a hiatus (since taping was in New York City), then came back with the ridiculous "Celebrity Millionaire" crap, ratings dropped, and they never got back to me before ABC pulled the show in 2002.

Yeah, I just saw this childish appeal to the boss. Still, it's a project run by children, so what else can you expect but childish behaviour.

Am I? Perhaps I'm just fed up of swimming against a tide of apathy, intolerance, ignorance, and hypocrisy.

If telling the unpalatable truth has become a crime then I'm certainly guilty as charged.

I'm sure if I was sensible I'd take your advice, but I'm a pig-headed stubborn sob; if I get blocked, I get blocked. One thing's for sure though, my next block will be my last.

I still wonder when Jimbo's Great Purge (T-H-L-K-D) will come? unhappy.gif fear.gif

QUOTE(Jimbo Wales)
Basically, yes. Indeed, I would say that admins should be held to a higher standard. ArbCom members, to a still-higher standard. And me - to the highest standard. This I say with an acknowledgment that we are all capable of error and folly, and should be forgiven such if we are acting in good faith. Nothing is simple. Justice is complex and thoughtful. Kindness is a lifestyle not an algorithm.--Jimbo Wales (talk) 02:52, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

QUOTE(Jimbo Wales)

You are misrepresenting that conversation. I was directly referring to DTobias's remark, just above, and someone mistook that part of my remarks as referring to you. It did not. I referred to people who are not here to build an encyclopedia. Your content contributions are voluminous, high quality, and much appreciated.

That doesn't change the fact that your behavior in terms of trolling and carrying on the way you do is unacceptable. You know this. And you will either change it or be banned from Wikipedia. You have caused too much harm to justify us putting up with this kind of behavior much longer.--Jimbo Wales (talk) 01:04, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

I can't remember by now, but I think they were "Founder of..." with other companies or websites listed, maybe things like Amazon or Ebay, but I don't remember the specific ones.

By process of elimination, I've gotta go with B, since the other options are provably false.

Actually, the title of "Godfather of Reggae" is somewhat up for grabs. Many people, this blogger for example, use this term when referring to the late Bob Marley - but the (still-alive) Alton Ellis actively claims it as well. To add to the confusion, a Miami DJ named Clint O'Neil calls himself "The Godfather of Reggae Radio," which isn't the same thing but still causes problems for people doing Google searches.

So of the four, I'd have to say Jimbo should go for Item C in order to make his permanent mark on the world. There's still plenty of time - he's only in his mid-40's, and we still don't know for a fact that he doesn't have any appreciable musical talent.

Vision of Wales in Rosto-man dreadlocks, singing No Wiki, No Cry with reggae back up. Then "Like Jimbo, like Jimbo, like Jimbo, like Jimbo, forever -- I hope you like Jimbo, too...." unsure.gif

Dreadlocks? Shit. Well, maybe that would be the day WR folks stop agonizing about the fact he doesn't shave.

This could make for a nice photo-shopping contest.
