QUOTE

Cheek kissing is a ritual or social gesture to indicate friendship, perform a greeting, to confer congratulations, to comfort someone, or to show respect. It does not necessarily indicate sexual or romantic interest.

Cheek kissing is very common in Southern Europe, the Mediterranean, the Middle East and Latin America. It is not as common in English-speaking Canada and the United States, Asia and Northern Europe. However, there are some exceptions in North America, including ethnic neighborhoods, such as Italian, French, or Hispanic neighborhoods, as well as Quebec, Louisiana and Miami.

I think he meant the Al Jolson bit.

I've fought hard to keep this, but there have to be limits.

I've been looking at the pile of stinking ordure that passes for a good 80% of new articles over the past few days, and it just beggars belief. Allowing people to create shit like that and then dealing with it afterwards just makes busywork. No wonder wikipedia needs an army of administrators just to keep it functioning at all, never mind well.

Forget Al Jolson -- you haven't lived until you've seen the Jerry Lewis 1959 version of "The Jazz Singer." And pay attention to the guy who plays his uncle -- that is Alan Reed, the voice of Fred Flintstone.

The unfortunate Nicholas Piontek has been in the article since October 31. Check the subsequent revisions, the anon IP gets more creative with each edit. It was not removed until I created this thread today. Coincidence?

What's this? Malleus is actually suggesting admins are slightly useful?

I do agree of course. We have far too much junk on Wikipedia that's displayed in the guise of an article. The ARS gang will try to save every article they possibly can (yes, I meant save), regardless of its merits, usefulness or notability. "If it exists, it is notable".

Leave it to Malleus to spoil all the fun =(

That photo just makes the whole article worthwhile

Almost as good as the "down low - too slow" library of photos

Yeah, I feel a bit sheepish in saying that, I have to admit.

In my defence though, my view has always been that the current system demands an army of administrators that with a little bit of common sense ought not to be needed. Anyone who doubts that's true ought to spend a couple of hours patrolling new pages to convince them otherwise.

"Uneasy mixture of a dictionary definition and "how-to" manual with no real content" would seem to be a fitting description of the pissing contest article as well, though. Is there an actualy difference besides "I like this one but not that one?"

If you read the discussion there's a very big difference. There were and are actual pissing contests. Also, I don't see anything "how-to manual" in the pissing contest article. Does it give you hints and tips on training to increase your overall reach?

On my browser this one is without sound. Part II has sound, part I, no. Somehow it's supposed to be related to "HD" setting, but I have no idea how to set that.

Get your reliable sources right here and here.

I'm thinking here must be a scene in Waiting for Guffman, if that counts.

Feel free to try and persuade others at the AfD that "Jazz hands" is anything more than a dictionary entry, and a pretty poor one at that, because you won't be persuading me.

Well that was fun. A little more work and I might have to nominate it for GA! smile.gif

I think this is one where the cites almost get in the way, though. If someone could explain why Google Images is full of jazz hands, for instance, or why a good number of fictional characters seem to talk about jazz hands, I say more power to them.

Then there's the use of "jazz hands" to mean "jazz veterans," but why would so many writers say just that? I'd love a section on the subconscious appropriation of the phrase into other contexts.

Gay...Judy Garland...oh, the humanity! rolleyes.gif

Seriously, the picture in "A Star is Born" has nothing to do with "jazz hands." It is a famous scene from the film where Judy's character frames herself for an imaginary close-up.

The article, even with a rewrite, deserves to be deleted as utter nonsense.

Someone really needs to add an image of the giant "jazz hands" sculpture outside Como train station.

You're right about Garland, although that gesture as used later for the "director frame" generally has fingers together.

If you Google-Image "Jazz hands" you get enough material for an interesting article. Too bad most of it is not usable since it's not in COMMONS. laugh.gif

Definitely surprised that sculpture isn't "by David Shankbone." It's definitely got the over/under technique down.
