Lightspeed Content Filter, used by many schools, has now officially blocked Commons for the porn stuff.

I haven't found a press release, but this was told to me by Wikiversity people who are connected to schools using the measure.

smile.gif Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet has free access to the sum of all human knowledge, except for all the kids whose web-browsers blocked the photos, due to the porn in them. But close. So close! rolleyes.gif

Would anyone mind if I moved the Lightspeed block to a new thread? It would seem to me to deserve one. Keeping it in the Iran thread will make it very hard to find in the future.

That is fine. I just didn't think it deserved its own thread when I couldn't find a press release.

Cock-up-over-conspiracy
Someone wrote who the Wikipedia War is being played over numerous websites, not surprising when many of its adherents and evangelists are techie types and network supporters. We recently say how OpenDNS have taken sides and express Wiki-Denial.

Taking two comments at random off Lightspeed forums, one has to wonder how genuine these are:

How can you justify blocking the Wikipedia branch of sites?
Wikipedia is in no way a forum/blog. It is a quick reference online encyclopedia, and contains valuable resources.

While I see the need to block certain websites in order to protect students and keep them from doing things they shouldn’t be while in school, I can’t help but think that Lightspeed sometimes blocks sites unnecessarily.

Now, while I’m certainly not against limiting what students have access to, I am wholeheartedly opposed to blocking sites like Wikipedia.org.

But the way, I don’t see where you get off classifying Wikipedia as a forum. It is an informational site dedicated to knowledge and therefore valuable tool for students.

Good stuff. But does that mean that if a Commons photo is used on another site such as Wikinews or the Spanish WP it will be visible?

Someone needs educating. Why on earth can't a site be both, as of course WP is?

Interesting. Citizendium which claims to be family friendly and has no known pr0n pics I'm aware of has been given the same rating as the Commons, R:

Very likely, their rating system is being manipulated by unscrupulous individuals who are "modding down" the ratings of their rivals. I first ran into that practice on Slashdot, when that site's own peculiar clone of FeloniousMonk similarly manipulated the system to mod down editors who were challenging him on his misconceptions.

Are Light Speed's ratings the product of crowd sourcing? I would find that completely inappropriate and something that parents and schools should understand before choosing.
