Maru is a good example of an "internet celebrity" BLP - these are people whose fame or notoriety is based primarily, if not entirely, on things like how many people have viewed their Youtube video(s) or the fact that they started a website that was popular for some length of time. (And as might be expected with Wikipedia, a disproportionate number of the latter group are "free culture" types, people who were involved with things like the filesharing movement, FOSS alternatives to expensive commercial software packages, and social networking, among other activities.)

It's probably impossible for Wikipedians to ever be truly objective about the actual degree to which these people are "notable," especially under their already alarmingly low standards. Luckily for them, that's only a problem if the article subjects want their privacy back or are being actively defamed by one or more established WP'ers - but in general I'd have to guess that the percentage of these subjects who are perfectly happy to be written about in this way is actually even higher than the overall percentage (which I'd guess is somewhere between 80 and 90 percent).

Anyhoo, I don't mean to single anyone out in particular, but folks like Gustavo Guerra (T-H-L-K-D), Andrej Preston (T-H-L-K-D), Lim Jeong-hyun (T-H-L-K-D) (aka "Funtwo") would never make it into a non-internet-based general reference encyclopedia, under almost any circumstances.

Then again, someday the internet might surpass movies, books, television, sports, and politics as the most prominent pathway to fame, not just the easiest or cheapest like it is now. Who knows?

I'm sure that this BLP is quite serious, but it still comes off as an outtake from Austin Powers.

I'd say that part of the problem is that the threshold for coverage in reliable sources has dropped dramatically... the idea of "once notable, always notable" makes good sense, but doesn't mesh as well in the age of publish it-ignore it. Sadly, if the sources think that cats or desperate housewives are worthy of continued attention, it's not surprising "we're the sum of all information" folks think so too (I finally got fed up with The Washington Post's corruption, and the fact that the Salahis are *still* making the front page.)

Which I think is cute, but not necessarily "encyclopedic" (whatever that means).

One of the problems with having so loose a definition of "encyclopedic" (by which I mean there isn't one!) is that it can be used on your enemies as just one more mask of WP:ILIKEIT or WP:IDONTLIKEIT.

For example, we lost "The New York Times and the Holocaust" as being not encyclopedic because no self-respecting encyclopedia would EVER have an article called that.

But we kept "IBM and the Holocaust" because it's essentially a long book report. About a book of the same name. But (we must admit) ALSO certainly nothing you'd find in a respectable encyclopedia (which doesn't do book reports).

Why? ILIKEIT vs. IDONTLIKEIT, basically. The people with the most wiki-juice won, as usual.

A real "encyclopedia" would list him by his legal full name, Sir Graham Eric Stirrup.
