Following a lead from one of the commenters on the examiner.com article, I found
this old 2004 conversation between Mr. Ting Chen (as
PhiloppÂ
(T-C-L-K-R-D)
- later renamed to
WingÂ
(T-C-L-K-R-D)
) and another Chinese user,
YachtÂ
(T-C-L-K-R-D)
- later pronounced "Throatwarblermangrove."
Apparently, in 2004 at least, Mr. Chen believed that the Christian religion is largely responsible for the existence - or specifically, the "importation" - of homophobia into China.
QUOTE(Philopp @ 11:12, 26 Jan 2004 (UTC))
It is the christian church which brings the definition of sin into China, and with it the mental medicine and psychology, which was at that time more a christian moral codex than a science.
So, China is for me a very good example, that the christian religion exported homophobe all arround the world.
Of course, as the commenter says, he's probably correct. (We had a similar situation in Des Moines, where gay folks were treated like "just regular corn-eatin' folks" until the Christians showed up and forced them all to drive Volvos and BMWs.) But statements like that, even from six years ago, could cost him the support of Mr. Ottava, who as we all know was brought into Wikipedia because of his credentials as an ethicist, and who is about as strident a supporter of the Christian-right anti-gay-rights agenda as is possible to get without being a regular Fox News on-air personality.
Without that vital support, I fear Mr. Chen's tenure as WMF Chairperson is likely to be a short one. (I give him 45 more minutes, tops, unless he manages to buy a few button-down shirts.)
I should also point out that the Christian religion was unable to export "homophobe" into Brazil until the 1970's, due to prohibitively high tariffs.
