A Frenchman was locked up for two days and is facing criminal charges for sending a joke email to Rachida Dati, the former Justice Minister, asking for "an inflation".

Whilst the English wikipedia mentions the original misspeak. The French wikipedia is deleting all references:

be interesting to see if and when the arrest makes it way in there.

Meanwhile in the UK trolling will also get you jail time:

Gee, that is charming. Send insulting email to French government officials, go to jail.
They could probably use a free-speech law. (Although this warms my dark little heart.)

Sarkozy's government is a joke anyway.

Miss Dati was an authoritarian Justice Minister thanks to her close links with President Nicolas Sarkozy, a former Interior Minister known for his uncompromising attitude to upholding the law.

He finally sacked Miss Dati for her inability to do her job properly, accusing her of being too interested in becoming a glamorous celebrity.

Mr Sarkozy is known to detest attacks on politicians and has frequently used the courts to defend his reputation.

One presumes that in French this translates to a pun.

At the last Burning Man, where most people get around on bicycles, there was an very small art-stand on the playa circle walkway which consisted entirely of a simple chained bicycle pump, with sign:

Free Blow Jobs For the Flacid
Sylar
Expressing contempt for a politician is illegal in France?! Wow, I didn't know France was that backward. If that was the law in the U.S., probably over 90% of the population could be arrested.

Except in rare cases, protecting your reputation in court doesn't work unless you have money, lawyers, PI's, connections and blackmail material.

Dueling is a lot more effective.
