Have we reached a point where anyone is simply making up stuff as we go along, and then sites are losing their original purposes, becoming general containers for everything, whatever they think about it being "right", "wrong", "good", "bad", or simply it existing or not existing?

I'm afraid so. Just as Gresham said that bad money drives out good money, we're in a world where bad Internet content drives out the stuff that you and I produce.

It's a phase of decadence, avoidance of responsibility, and blame shifting.

And fuckwittery. Trouble is, any idiot can easily put stuff on the Internet, and loads of idiots do. Modern technology makes it far too easy.

Who are they?
What ideals do they represent, if they have any?

What are they making and what are they protesting against?

Either they're fuzzy and often ill-informed "do-gooders" with too much time on their hands, or they're people with a very specific objective (often inimical to ordinary folks like you and me). For example, anti-GM protesters either don't know what they're talking about or are anarchists or Marxists using GM crops as a stick to beat "capitalism".

Retrospect
GM is the only way to feed the starving billions. And it reduces the need for bloody pesticides because they can make pest-resistant crops. So anyone who claims to be a Green and oppose GM is either a fuckwit or a liar.
