The New York Times has a blog entry about this, along with a comment section. Some teenager posted that Wikipedia is "awesome," so I posted the following in response:

Wikipedia might be “awesome,” but that doesn’t make it factual or true. The un-awesome reality is that Wikipedia is hollow at the core: it regards the truth as subordinate to consensus. If Wikipedia had existed in the Middle Ages, it would have supported the Catholic Church against Copernicus and Gallileo, and if it had existed in Germany in 1940 it would have told us all about the unique phrenology of the Jewish skull.

Be careful when using Wikipedia. It is not a reliable source of information. Its articles represent a distillation of amateur opinion.

Its articles represent a distillation of amateur opinion.

Very well put. Distillation is an apt metaphor, becuase unfortunately it is the strongly held amateur opinions that become prominent on Wikipedia, not the ones that approximate truth.

WhispersOfWisdom
Oh the humanity!

LOLS!

My opinions only:

Well, when something hits home, so to speak, I believe many, if not most of us, feel a compulsive repsonse of protection, or self preservation, and thus, try to "correct" the news, so as to appear more normal, positively exceptional, tolerable, and clean of all warts, disease, or just plain bad manners.

I know with certainty that I want everyone on earth to love me, even if only for a moment. biggrin.gif

From corporations to families to Jimbo Wales, people tend to be people. That is what we do.

Unfortunately, Wikipedia is run by children from a world with less than a 30 second attention span.
A place run by kids that believe learning to play "guitar hero" is more important than actually learning how to play a guitar.

Wikipedia represents a world without patience or wisdom, and it is also lacking leaders that are elected so as to make meaningful decisions for all of us. Such a place is a world turned toward chaos and immorality. That world will create a new "truth" every 30 seconds, even if it isn't the truth at all. Whatever is decided by a handful of kids to be the truth, can be put into place via "consensus." That, is the painful reality facing the "founders" of Wikipedia.

I do not blame anyone for not wanting their family or friends to be part of the largest MySpace on earth, which is essentially what Wikipedia has become. The difference is: at least MySpace has a corporate governing body that can and does have a final say in what happens to the site.

Wikipedia is not allowed as a source of reliable information in our schools, and for that, I am grateful. wink.gif
