The physicists should perhaps be concerned about
the part of the GFDL that says that any clueless
person can modify their work.
Perhaps a licence allowing free distribution of
unmodifed versions of their work would be more
appropriate. Presumably, exceptions could be
made for minor modifications, such as those that
are merely aesthetic.

I think it's been noted before that this story is based on a misconception. Physicists want the right to post their articles elsewhere, but not necessarily on Wikipedia. (Conservapedia, maybe? 
)
