I can report on Rev. Moon's New World Encyclopedia, for which I provided much technical help (e.g., MediaWiki user training). It's probably the most expensive fork to date.

I've been clicking on random pages, and I must say, it is fairly impressive. The 11,500 public articles are only editable by admins. As far as I can tell they all use real names and edit only subject matter related to their earned degrees.

There are 8178 articles in Category:Paid, so that's probably how it became the most expensive fork.

Thanks to the magic of open source licensing your child can now contribute work to the Unification Church without ever seeing the inside of an airport.

I looked at the histories of about 10 articles, and I kept seeing wide swaths of edits by the same seven or eight people. Very interesting. It would seem it wouldn't take an army of volunteers to improve and stabilize tens of thousands of Wikipedia articles; rather, maybe just a couple of platoons.

Then again, this site is only getting about three times the reach and roughly the same number of page views as Wikipedia Review. So, it's likely not worth it.

The Moonies can probably pull it off, if their experience with the Washington Times is any indication.

Aren't they supposed to attribute in the edit summary?

Looks very nice - professional layout and appearance. One thing though, I typed in 'Moonie' and the search function returned 'Brainwashing'.

Wow! you can hit the 'random page' button and not be deluged with crap.

Writer application;

Is this a New World Encylopedia or a New World Encyclopedia?

On the main page there is a montage of photographs. Almost half of which are pictures of Americans. One of them is a picture of Ronald Reagan?!?

Some of the premises are good. But there are two things the world doesn't need:
  1. A moonie encyclopedia
  2. Yet another internet "encyclopedia" which covers everything from an almost entirely American narrow world view, and in effect adds to the overwhelming blanket of propaganda that is increasingly difficult to escape from.

Hey, sounds good to me. You silly Brits and your Canadian stooges have already screwed up Wikipedia. It is time for the Americans to show you how to really screw up an online encyclopedia!

Well maybe one day they will get around to providing a publicly viewable article on the largest Canadian city.

Or a very common exercise. I wonder if they'll use the peculiar British spelling "Press-up" though.

The Moonies make their own Encyclopedia strikingly free of David
Shankbone's erection and his photos of fucking cats and pissing goats

Now, I always thought that the Wikipedia was a Canadian conspiracy to confuse and destabilize the American proletariat driving them toward racial and civil wars polarized between conflicting global interests, no wonder those sneaky British Rothschilds funded Anti-Christs are involved too. I am glad you and Lyndon LaRouche Bag were able to clear that one up for us!

Funnily enough, whilst I agree that what the world does not need are religious cults, never mind an Encyclopedia run by a religious cult, it is interesting and I think these guys have got the idea approximately right. Shame the look is a little anaemic and too reverential to the Mother of all Wikis, but it is better.

I am reading the Editor-in-chief's CV and it looks like a breakdown of just about every Wiki-war there has been. As suspicious of anyone that claims to have "worked with the Dalai Lama" as I am (which in interfaith terms generally means "having sat down and had a chat" ), his combination of real life cult experience and real life conflict really ought to give him the kind of qualities that would be required for handling the Pee-dia.

Ditto, some of the editors have unquestionably good journalistic backgrounds, even if their adherence to Sun Myung Moon raises others. I can see their interest in producing something that is flattering and reputable to their cause, which must partly be to lend credibility to their cause.

Frank Kaufmann, Ph.D. - Editor in chief

Frank Kaufmann is editor-in-chief of The New World Encyclopedia and project leader. He is also executive director of the Inter-Religious Federation for World Peace (IRFWP) and editor-in-chief of Dialogue and Alliance (a scholarly journal on religion and peace). Dr. Kaufmann has worked in religion and conflict resolution for 29 years, at times in physical danger. His missions have taken him to areas of conflict, including Israel, Palestine, Croatia, the Eritrea – Ethiopia border, India, Kashmir, revolutionary centers in the Philippines, the Arabian Gulf, and Sri Lanka. He teaches World Religions, Church History, Religion and Conflict Resolution, and other courses in the New York area, and enjoys a vigorous public speaking schedule on peace and conflict resolution.

Tearing apart my cigarette packet to solve the Wiki world's problems ... if we take that the Britannica employs about 100 full-time editors, say 100 x $30,000 gives one some idea of the budget that would be required. 100 into 13,000,000 topics equates to 130,000 each; 500 a day over a year, 250 a day over 2 years, 125 a day over 3 years ... and so on. As new content would continue to be added, it would be like painting the Golden Gate Bridge but sort of doable.

Of course, if one removed all the drama queens and trivial cruft through a regime change there would be plenty of worthy enough volunteers. Swathes of topics like TV show reviews, current affairs, all the pornography and all of David Shankbone fucking-cats-pissing-goats-and-erections type "work", could always be dumped over at Wikia instead of being merely trashed. I cant imagine the World Saviour and long term weapons manufacturer putting up with.

(In the service of truth, Kahr is actually owned by Moon's son but the cult leader has been implicated in 'moonitions' manufacture in Korea since the 70s.)

It's funny that they stripped out all mention of Moon's political endeavors (CTRL-F "Reagan" - no matches found), as well as (far less surprisingly) the controversies and criticism section that was well-bolstered by mainstream sources.

And Keith Moon is a red link there. All in all, a disappointment. thumbsdown.gif

I don't care how they spell it, as long as they have illustrations of LaraLove doing the exercise. Ooooh, work it, Lara! (Horsey does the happy dance.) evilgrin.gif
