Vacant Board Expertise Seat Update

QUOTE
Sue provided the Board with an update on the status of the search to
fill the one remaining vacant expertise seat on the Board of Trustees.
She explained that, as per the request of the Board at its previous
meeting in April in Berlin, she has hired recruiter Eunice Azzani to
assist with the process, and has provided Eunice with the Board's four
criteria for the remaining vacant seat: that the new Trustee 1) have
expertise in Asia, 2) have significant non-profit governance or
managerial experience, 3) have some fundraising expertise and 4) be
female
.

Wow. They really did explicitly say they want a woman. Also, that's a pretty hard description to fill. In a view I've expressed before, I'd really like to see them recruit someone with experience in either academia or traditional publishing, but this seems not to be the direction the board wants to take. There are lots of highly qualified academics with a big interest in the internet or IT (James O'Donnell comes to mind as a perfect candidate), and there are plenty of publishing types who would be interested in getting involved with Wikimedia I'm sure. If they did bring someone on with that sort of background, it would be not only a credibility boost for the WMF, but I think that such a person would whip the organization into shape.

Well, they didn't say "woman". "Female" is all you need to be. I'm sure there are some debates that could take place about gender status, and about age. A 14-year-old girl might suffice!

While trustees are not compensated, they are officers and therefore might fall within the scope of nondiscrimination law.

I guess Jimbo must be between girlfriends again.

I wonder if pre-op transsexuals will count. Wikipedia seems to have a disproportionate number of those gals.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course.

I have no problem with the requirements for the position. I would have other priority for the use of expertise, such as experts in addressing child protective concerns on websites. Still this is an overall favorable development and seeking to include more participation from women or people with diverse cultural backgrounds is completely legitimate.

They'll use crowdsourcing, naturally, as per the collaborative spirit of Wikipedia.

They just hired Moka Pantages, a Korean-American who was living in Seoul to be the communications officer. She fits at least two of the four criteria, plus she has an account on many different social media websites. So she's got that going for her.

Agreed. Eight of nine current Trustees are male. Taking this kind of measure to get 20% female representation isn't unreasonable.

Never mind, I just saw her myspace from your link. She is hot.
