a) what sources did they use to assume this?
b) just because they have a PhD doesn't mean that they are not just uploading more porn nor indulging in their online sub-dom sadistic fantasies, documenting Star Trek minutiae.

Actually, it's not your Doctor of Humanities degree that's rescinded. It's just your humanity that's rescinded when you saunter into that Post-Modern Theater of the Absurd.

I don't have hard and fast numbers, but I'm pretty sure if you polled 1,000 American adults, well over 10 of them would say they hold a PhD, although about 10 should truthfully say they do. And since Wikipedia attracts folks like Ryan "Essjay" Jordan, it's not hard to imagine a 4x factor of self-reported degree inflation among Wikipedia editors.

It is a known fact that about 45,000 PhD degrees are awarded each year in the United States.
