All outbound links from the English language Wikipedia Site include now the nofollow attribute, meaning that these links should no longer count in the Google's search engine result algorithm.

If you build it, they will come. The "it" in this case isn't a cornfield in Iowa but the insanely popular Wikipedia, and "they" are spammers. As the site has skyrocketed in popularity over the last several years, it has become an increasingly attractive target for link spammers.
